The Tigera team recently returned from KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America and CalicoCon 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. It was great, as always, to attend these events, feel the energy of our community, and hold in-depth discussions at the booth and in our dedicated sessions that revealed specific, critical shifts shaping the future of cloud-native platforms.
We pulled together observations from our Tigera engineers and product experts in attendance to identify three key trends that are directly influencing how organizations manage Kubernetes today.
🤖 Trend 1: Kubernetes is Central to AI Workload Orchestration
A frequent and significant topic of conversation was the role of Kubernetes in supporting Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) infrastructure.
The consensus is clear: Kubernetes is becoming the standard orchestration layer for these specialized workloads. This requires careful consideration of networking and security policies tailored to high-demand environments. Observations from the Tigera team indicated a consistent focus on positioning Kubernetes as the essential orchestration layer for AI workloads. This trend underscores the need for robust, high-performance CNI solutions designed for the future of specialized computing.
🌐 Trend 2: Growth in Edge Deployments Increases Complexity
Conversations pointed to a growing and tangible expansion of Kubernetes beyond central data centers and core clouds. Organizations are actively deploying lightweight clusters in highly distributed locations, or “the edge.”
This growth covers a wide variety of environments—from retail sites and branch offices to factory floors. Various discussions highlighted that Kubernetes at the edge is becoming popular. The challenge here is operational: managing the network, security, and troubleshooting for hundreds of small, remote clusters drastically increases administrative overhead, making efficient, unified tooling essential.
🛠️ Trend 3: Platform Teams Seek Consolidation to Combat Tool Fatigue
A dominant theme expressed by platform engineers was the exhaustion resulting from maintaining too many disparate tools for networking, security, and observability. This operational challenge, described by some as “networking tool sprawl,” is a real pain point.
Many users expressed that they are fatigued from maintaining numerous tools just to configure and run their clusters. This feedback strongly validates the positive reception Calico received for its unified platform approach. The market is actively searching for solutions that consolidate functions, reduce maintenance burden, and simplify the overall cloud-native stack.
You Might Be Missing Key Calico Features 💡
Despite the high interest in efficiency and security, Tigera team members observed a surprising gap in feature adoption among current Calico users. Awareness was lower than expected for some of our recent, powerful capabilities.
If you are currently running Calico, you should be taking advantage of:
- Whisker Observability: Delivers deep network and application performance insights, simplifying the troubleshooting often required by complex edge or AI environments.
- Staged Policies: Allows security teams to test and validate new network policies in a safe, parallel environment before deploying them live, significantly reducing the risk of errors and service disruption.
These features are direct answers to the need for unified solutions and simplified management.
🎉 Community & Engagement Highlights
Beyond the technical trends, the event was a success for community building. The team’s sessions, including overviews of What’s New in Calico v3.30 and Beyond and deep dives into Calico eBPF, were highly rated.
The CalicoCon after-party, which some attendees singled out as their “Favourite moment,” provided a space for meaningful, in-depth technical discussions outside the main event floor.
KubeCon was great thanks to the strong and enthusiastic Calico community!
